Champlain Discovery

June 17 - July 20, 2019

Get ready for a challenge! During this exciting co-educational program ten individuals, ages 13–16, build a 17' sea kayak, launch their boats and paddle for ten days, camping and exploring Lake Champlain. At the end of the journey, participants take home the boats they build.

Description

The adventure begins with three weeks of day camp at LCMM where you will build your boat and learn the basic skills needed for your journey. Once your kayak is complete and you have the basics under your belt, you will leave for a 10-day adventure from Whitehall, NY to Burlington, VT with stops along the way to explore and learn from the lake! 

Champlain Discovery is a challenging program, offering great personal growth and satisfaction. We live outdoors for the paddling portion of the program, occasionally traveling in weather that is uncooperative. Each participant, is responsible for cooking, cleaning and personal and group safety. 

Qualifications for participation are:

  • Must be 13-16 years old.
  • Must have enthusiasm and desire to build a
    kayak, and then go paddling and camping for
    10 days.
  • Must want to work cooperatively with others to
    accomplish a common goal.

Building your own kayak is both fun and rewarding. And you get to take the kayak home with you at the end of the trip!

You'll learn how to safely use hand power tools as you build your kayak.

Part of kayaking is learning how to do a wet exit and how to get back into your boat!

The real test of your kayak building skills comes next. The 10 day expedition along the shoreline of Lake Champlain!

Wind, Oar, Explore

July 12-19, 2019

You'll be in the wind and water aboard our 29 foot-long whaleboat!

Description

This adventure will start from our campus in Vergennes and head north toward Canada, camping and exploring along the way.

Explore the wonders of Lake Champlain for seven days in our traditional 29 foot-long whaleboats. Participants sail and row as a team in these wooden boats, learning maritime and wilderness camping skills.

You will be living outdoors and sailing or rowing every day -- come prepared for hard-work, good fun, and incredible teamwork!

Qualifications for participation are:

  • Must be 13-16 years old.
  • Must have enthusiasm to row and camp for 7 days along Lake Champlain.
  • Must want to work cooperatively with others to
    accomplish a common goal.

Price: $1000

Expedition Champlain

July 27 - August 3, 2019

Take your place at one of the 6 oars in a 32’ rowing boat called a pilot gig. Explore the wonders of Lake Champlain for seven days with your boat mates. You're likely to face wind and waves while you navigate along the lake so bring your muscles and your camera!

Description

This adventure will start from our campus in Vergennes and head north toward Canada, camping and exploring along the way.

You will be part of a team and row together in traditional wooden rowing gigs built by students in our Longboats program. Along the way you'll learn maritime and wilderness camping skills and experience the cultural and natural world that makes Lake Champlain so special.

You will be living outdoors and rowing every day -- come prepared for hard work, good fun, and incredible teamwork!

Qualifications for participation are:

  • Must be 13-16 years old.
  • Must have enthusiasm to row and camp for
    7 days along Lake Champlain.
  • Must want to work cooperatively with others to
