Summer Lake Adventure Camps

This summer take your passion for adventure into the sun and onto the waters of Lake Champlain! Come join the Maritime Museum's experienced program staff for adventure camps in a great location. Our four-acre campus provides a fleet of watercraft, various exhibits and workshops, and equipment for snorkeling and robotic exploration. This summer we are offering two exciting new camps that include overnight stays. Don’t miss out on these opportunities of a life time!

Week 1

June 25 - June 29,  2018

Basic Boating Certification

BBC is all about giving you the skills to handle the helm! This week-long course is an exciting sampler, featuring rowing, paddling, sailing, and handling small engines. Explore everything from leaving the dock to handling a worst-case scenario. You can even receive a VT Boater's Card to certify your knowledge. Get out on the lake this summer!

One And Only Fish Camp

In this week-long adventure with our fishy friends you will learn about cool fish adaptations and anatomy. You'll also learn to snorkel, make fishing rods, use seine nets, and cast a fly rod. This will be the highlight of your summer with underwater cameras, a Remotely Operated Vehicle and great new friends!

Week 2

July 2 - July 6,  2018

Build Your Own Adventure Robot

Build a custom Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to explore Lake Champlain! Learn how to assemble, solder, and wire a SeaPerch ROV and learn to fly it over the mysterious bottom of Lake Champlain. With your own creation, you will discover how useful an ROV can be as we study shipwrecks and aquatic life. Don't worry about getting too attached to your SeaPerch - at the end of the camp, you can take it home!  (Camp will meet on July 4.)

Shipwreck Discovery: Snorkel Camp

Ever hung out at the bottom of a lake? Now's your chance! Learn how to breathe underwater as you discover and explore famous shipwrecks! Explore the wonders of underwater habitats from a fish-eye view. Come along on this adventure, meet LCMM's dive team and snorkel like a pro! The week also includes a one day Try SCUBA program.  What kind of cool stuff do you think is down on the bottom of Lake Champlain?   (Camp will meet on July 4.)

Week 3

July 9 - July 13,  2018

Paddle and Splash

Paddle to different places on the lake and jump in! We provide the mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, and other essentials. Every day we'll paddle a canoe to another great snorkeling location, and explore from a person's perspective, and through the eyes of a fish. This camp will build your confidence in the water and on the water, while you connect to Lake Champlain as never before. So paddle, splash, and stock up on great stories to share!

Heavy Metal Mania

Back again by popular demand!! Want to play with red hot metal and hit things really hard? This sampler will give you a taste of the ancient arts of pounding iron, melting bronze, and shaping sheet copper. Work with your hands, get dirty, make fascinating things, and take them home. In between metal projects, we’ll cool off with swimming and games.

Week 4

July 16 - July 20,  2018

Habitat Camp

Join our staff on a wonderful adventure through the nature surrounding Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Each day we will delve into the habitat of a new critter. From beavers to birds, from frogs to fish, join us on this adventure as we immerse ourselves in new worlds. We will spend each day observing friendly habitats, then team up to create a human sized home suitable for the locations we visit! Get excited for a week of hiking, canoeing, snorkeling and hands-on fun!

Cycle and Snorkel

Here's your chance to explore Lake Champlain up close and personal! We'll provide the mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, and snorkeling gear, and you can bring your own bike and helmet! Explore by land as you bike each day to a new location on the lake, then cool down by strapping on a snorkel and diving in! Discover underwater secrets known only to the eyes of fish! Check out plants and animals and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Week 5

July 23 - July 27,  2018

Wooden Boat Building

Each camper will build their own 15’ wooden canoe and learn to use it safely. We’ll learn about the sciences and skills that go into boat-building, and have a great time doing it! These one-of-a-kind boats are yours to keep!

Week 6

July 30 - August 3,  2018

18th Century Adventure

Sailors and soldiers! Spend a week in the 18th Century learning all the skills of life in the army and navy of the Colonies. We will cook our meals over an open fire, learn to march, row, handle flintlock firearms, swords, and cannons. Campers will explore the blacksmith shop and learn about iron working, start fire with flint and steel, navigate the land and the water, explore real artifacts from the time period, and much more! Our week will culminate with a Thursday night overnight aboard the Gunboat Philadelphia II.

Project Plastic!

What's that stuff in our lake?  Come join Lake Champlain Maritime Museum's field crew in a scientific study of how plastic is turning up in our waterways. Team up with researchers to take water samples, collect data and explore this threat.  There will be plenty of time on and in the water to keep our cool while we build research skills and get serious about solutions to this emerging problem.

Lake and Trail Explorers

Come connect with wild places! Visit the neighborhoods of islands, cliffs, rivers, and beaches, and meet all the special plants, mammals, fish, and birds that call these places home. Each day we will go to new places and explore new trails using compasses, maps, and field guides to understand some of the natural wonders all around us. We will hike and canoe, snorkel and more!

Get Lost Camp!

Do you know where you are right now? Well, what if you didn't?  Can you read a map? How about a compass? This camp studies the ancient and always changing art of navigation. Learn age-old secrets of cartographers, new information from tech developers, and the difference between maps and charts as you find your way on land and lake. Hone your skills over the course of the week culminating in a guided challenge to find your way back from an “unknown” location! Great for the camper who wants to explore and accomplish fun challenges!
